A long, long time ago in a land far, far away…
Ok, maybe it was 2012. And maybe I was in Brooklyn, but in so many ways it feels like it’s been ages! I was sitting behind my computer screen at Gothamist, slowly scrolling through the endless feed of Twitter updates, when a Huffington Post article caught my eye (alas, something to kill time!). It was a piece, written by a bride-to-be. She was writing to vent her frustrations about the lack of same sex wedding resources. She said she had done what any bride in her position would do, she bought a bunch of bridal magazines and plopped down to plan her dream wedding, all to realize that none of these publications would work for her. She was surprised. She was disappointed. She still had a wedding to plan!
I sat there thinking, this must be a madwoman. Maybe she’s never heard of Google? But then, something made me question this. I quickly realized that this woman was not mad. She was rightfully peeved. So I got peeved, too! What if I wanted to get married? Where would I turn? So, after toying around with the idea, I created a website that I would use to plan a wedding, a website that was not only aesthetically pleasing, but also informative. Without rainbows. Because it’s about time we stop stereotyping and give LGBT couples the resources they deserve to plan their nuptials! I introduce you to H&H Weddings (His&His/Her&Hers Weddings), a high-end resource for LGBT couples who are planning their weddings!
It’s been about two years since inception and I have to say that I never thought I would see things where they are. I have don’t have a marketing background, I don’t know the first thing about web design, but I have immersed myself in this world that is the last place I ever thought I would end up, “Me? Weddings? No.” But here I am, building a brand that I am excited about every day. And it feels amazing. I have learned so much about weddings, LGBT weddings (yes, there are a lot of differences, but we’ll get into that later) and the LGBT community in general.
I hope you enjoy my monthly blog posts as much as I’ll enjoy writing them!
