“As a Buffalo native and huge fan of Buffalo Indie Weddings, your instagram and website were instrumental in our wedding planning!”

“We met our freshman year of college at the University at Buffalo through mutual friends, but we didn’t start dating until the summer after sophomore year. We quickly bonded over our love of Harry Potter, Love Actually, and all things Buffalo. It became clear it was something special when Ben showed me his childhood snowglobe collection, not knowing that I also collected them. Eight years, two cats, and one house later, here we are! We decided to propose to each other because that was more “us” than a traditional engagement. It didn’t seem fair to us that only one of us would be asked, so I got a ring, he got a watch, and we celebrated by going to Iceland to see the Northern Lights. Really we had planned to do our joint proposal there, but the night before while packing for the trip, we just couldn’t wait!! “Instead of doing wedding favors, we made donations to organizations that we support: Planned Parenthood, the American Refugee Committee, and the ACLU. My mom loves crafting, so she made 20 unique wreaths as the centerpieces; each table had its own distinctive style. And my parents-in-law made a gorgeous Chuppah from a tree in their backyard. I also wanted my wedding party to love their dresses, so we did a mix and match of shades of purple, rather than me choosing what everyone wore. “It was really important to me that I not be “given away,” but at the same time I wanted to be respectful of my father who had dreamed of this day since I was born. So I walked him down the aisle to his seat, and then continued the rest of the way by myself. We also reversed where we stood, so I was on the right and the groom was on the left. We love science and social justice, so our readings were from Carl Sagan and Justice Kennedy (US Supreme Court’s ruling legalizing same-sex marriage), rather than more traditional wedding readings. I love dessert more than anything, so instead of a dessert table, the entire backroom of Asbury Hall was filled with cupcakes (complete with Buffalo Bills décor), cookies, donuts, and poptarts all made by Fairy Cakes. And because 3.5 hours of dancing & photoboothing isn’t enough, we kept the party going until 2 AM! We rented out the downstairs of Asbury Hall for our after party, complete with a giant order of pizza and chicken wings for all guests. “Some of our favorite moments from the day were getting ready with our best friends, our first look at the Mansion on Delaware, taking photos in downtown Buffalo, seeing all of the people we love in one place, sharing our vows in front of our families and friends, and dancing the night away! “We made our wedding unique by planning all aspects of the day together. It was important to us that every part of this day represented our relationship, especially the ceremony itself. My cousin, who is basically a sister to me, officiated our wedding. She wrote the most beautiful ceremony for us, and instead of saying “I do,” we vowed, “I will.” We also wrote our own vows that focused not just on our relationship, but also honored our families and friends. To us, our wedding was about our communities joining together, and celebrating the love we have been blessed with in all forms. It was the best day ever.”
